A religious Christian site in the Old City

In Christianity, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one the most recognizable pieces of religious imagery. To many people, it is the ultimate representation of Jesus Christ's love, compassion and devotion to humankind. The art depicts Christ pointing to his human heart. Devotion to the Sacred Heart is seen mainly in the Roman Catholic Church, as well as among some Lutherans and Anglicans.

Holy place for Christianity

Every year, many Christian churches mark the Feast of the Sacred Heart. It is a considered a moveable feast, as the date of celebration moves in relation to the date of Easter, the most important feast in Christianity. These dates also vary between Eastern and Western churches, with Catholics and many Western Churches calculating using the Gregorian Calendar, while Eastern churches use the Julian Calendar. The earliest possible date for the Feast of the Sacred Heart is May 29th, and the latest possible date is July 2nd.

Discover Israel Holy Places

Today, many Christian pilgrims of all denominations and traditions travel to visit holy locations in Israel. An essential stop on the 'Holy Trail' is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This is the place where the body of Jesus is said to be buried. The site is also thought to be the Hill of Calvary, also known as Golgotha, where Christ is believed to have been crucified. In addition to this well-known church, there are many other important Christian sites found in Israel such as:

  • Bethlehem - the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth and perhaps the ultimate destination during the holidays of Easter and Christmas.
  • Nazareth - the childhood home of Jesus, and today home to the largest Christian church in the Middle East.
  • The Jesus Trail - the recently developed hiking trail that follows in Jesus’ footsteps in the Galilee, running from Nazareth to Capernaum.
  • Capernaum - “The town of Jesus,” where several churches and a museum celebrate the life and teachings of Jesus.

The easiest and most convenient way to travel and to see all the sites is by car.  Car rental in Israel its easy and can be much cheaper than using public transportation.
