Native Israelis and tourists alike are all very excited about the new airport that was recently opened in Eilat. Named after Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut, the Ramon Airport is the newest international gateway in the Middle East. It is nicknamed Timna Airport because it is located in the Timna Valley.
In the Airport
The airport has a duty-free store, transportation services, and a currency exchange booth on site, as is to be found in all international airports. It is expected to process two million passengers per year. Landing at the airport is an amazing sight, with desert all around it and the Red Sea up ahead. You can see Egypt and Jordan as you land as well.
When you land at Ramon Airport, you will need to take transportation to your hotel as it is set about ten miles north of the beach. This is different from the old airport in Eilat, which was adjacent to both the city and the hotel strip. The location of the new airport will now allow Eilat's residents to sleep in a much quieter environment as it is far away from the residential area.
While you are in Eilat, enjoy taking day trips to sites such as Petra or the Red Crater, or simply go jeeping in the desert. Eilat is also home to miles of coral reefs and the Underwater Observatory. Take a swim with the dolphins or go snorkeling in one of Eilat's beaches.
Nightlife in Eilat abounds. Walk on the promenade and shop in Eilat's marketplace for jewelry made of shells or buy yourself a pretty pair of sandals. Or, visit one of Eilat's bars for good music and late-night food.
Once you have earned your suntan by sitting at the pool and the beach and you have checked out the shops in the Ice Mall, where you have also enjoyed ice skating and virtual reality fun, it is time to head back to the Ramon Airport. Make sure you have done as much duty-free shopping as Eilat has to offer and have tried some of the restaurants that Eilat is famous for and make your way to the airport.
The best way to get around Eilat is to use car rental israel service at the Ramon Airport. This way you can be sure to enjoy every minute of your trip.
